SPECIAL MEETING
BOARD OF EDUCATION
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 2006

The special meeting of the West Franklin USD #287 Board of Education was held Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at the Pomona High School Multi-Purpose Room in Pomona, Kansas.

Board members present were: Neal Baker, Keith Milliken, Mary Ann Parkin, Janie Dillon, Randy Hermreck, and Nancy Reed. Administrators present were: Superintendent Susan Myers, Board Clerk Teresa Hawkins and Principals Rick Smith, Royce Powelson, Eric Koppes, Susan Wildeman, and Curriculum Director Mary Schleicher. Also present were: Robin Nitcher, Juanita Sleichter, Heather Sleichter, Lila Reekie, Chris Reekie, Connie Wadkins, and Cleon Rickel from the Ottawa Herald

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by President, Neal Baker.

Neal Baker turned the meeting over to Patrick Dunn, IBB Mediator.

The board added the following problem statements to the statements compiled at the March 1, 2006 meeting.

• How can we afford to maintain or replace our facilities?

2. How do we effectively utilize our buildings?

The board worked in small groups to improve, combine, or find common themes for all problem statements.

Common Theme

• Money

• How do we maintain a high quality system with our budget?

The problem statements will be discussed in the following order:

• How do we afford to offer the best curriculum and meet new graduation requirements?

• How do we maintain effective student/teacher ratios?

• How do we afford to recruit and retain good staff?

• How do we attract more students?

• How do we effectively utilize our buildings?

• How do we afford to maintain or replace our facilities?

The next two meetings have been set for Monday, March 27, 2006 at 7:00 pm and Wednesday, April 19 th at 6:00 pm in the Pomona High School multi-purpose room.

Mr. Dunn began the public comment session at 8:55 pm and he resided over this session as moderator.

President Neal Baker adjourned the meeting at 9:11 pm.
