Success Academy

Status: 1 credit

Course Description: Success Academy is a course for all freshmen to help them get ready for high school and later in life. Exploring careers, participating in interest tests, and completing applications will help the students see the relevance of academics to real life.  They will also study budgets, check writing, loans, personal credit and the importance of maintaining financial records. In addition they will work with programs that will help the student with instructions, teamwork, construction, and maintaining a business. 

 

Keyboarding

Prerequisite: None
Grade: 9
Status: ½ credit

Course Description: The focus of this course is on improving keystroking skills and operation of function keys with speed and accuracy.  They will further their knowledge in proofreading, formatting, and proper applications in word processing.  Added work in publishing presentation materials for themselves and businesses add depth to word processing.

 

Computer Technology

Prerequisite: Keyboarding
Grade: 10
Status: Required for Admissions to a Regents College
             1 credit

Course Description: Students learn to use and integrate advanced features of word processing, spreadsheet, publications, database, and multimedia presentation software using Microsoft Office. Students also learn proper e-mail and Internet skills and develop an understanding of social and ethical issues in computing. The course goal is to make the student competent in the use of current business applications software. (Vocational)

Introduction to Business

Status:  1 credit

Course Description:  This class emphasizes helping students understand their roles as consumers, workers, and citizens in our economy by introducing them to the world of business.  It also prepares them for more beneficial interaction with business.  Topics include the role of business, the computer age, the work force, consumerism, banking and financial services, money management, credit, savings and investments, and insurance.

Business Economics

Status: 1 credit

 

Course Description: Business Economics is a business class where students become involved in the classroom and the real world of supply and demand, capital/labor, and business/government. Students will discover how economic principles relate to their personal lives and the world around them.

 

 

Computer Applications (IHT)

 Advanced Computer Applications (IHT)

Prerequisite: Computer Technology
Grade: 11-12
Status: 1 credit per class

Dual Credit Option

Course Description: The majority of student assignments include live production work that simulates a business environment and allows students to apply skills, knowledge, and attitudes that accompany working in a business setting. Live production work is solicited from the community and the school district with over 51% coming from the community. The work includes business cards, programs, invitations, calendars, flyers, directories, and other types of printed documents. (Vocational)

 

Multimedia Presentation

Grade: 11 - 12
Status: 1 credit

Dual Credit Option

Course Description: Multimedia Presentation is designed to help the student learn how to create presentations using Multimedia technologies.  Digital and video presentations can include graphics, photos, captured video, music, sound effects, animation, and digital photographs.  A comprehensive project is completed after each major unit.

 

Accounting I

Dual Credit Option

Course Description: Students will learn the basic accounting procedures used to operate a business. Principles include journalizing transactions, posting to appropriate ledgers, preparing financial statements and worksheets, adjusting and closing entries, payroll accounting, recording sales and purchases, uncollectible accounts, plant assets and depreciation, notes and interest, and dividends. Extensive use of spreadsheet applications is included. Goal of course is to make students competent in the basic procedures of accounting. (Vocational)

 

Computerized Accounting II

Prerequisite: Accounting I
Grade: 12
Status: 1 credit

Course Description: Students will apply previous accounting knowledge using automated accounting systems and expand their knowledge of corporate accounting. (Vocational)

 

Entrepreneurship

 

Prerequisite: None
Grade: 11-12
Status: 1 credit

Course Description: Entrepreneurship is a specialized business course designed to provide students the skills needed to effectively organize, develop, create, and manage their own business. This course is based upon the Marketing Education Framework which includes: 1) business, management, and entrepreneurship, 2) communication and interpersonal skills, 3) economics, and  4) professional development foundation. Emphasis is placed on the functions of marketing: distribution, financing, marketing information management, pricing, promotion, and selling. Additional topics to be addressed are assessment of personal skills, the components of the free enterprise system and its place in our global economy, human relations and interpersonal skills, the importance of business ethics, and the role quality and service play in business.

 

Business and Personal Law

Prerequisite: None
Grade: 11-12
Status: 1 credit

 

Course Description: Business and Personal Law is a business course that provides the basic foundation of the legal system. Students are introduced to the law through a brief look at the following topics: laws development, the American legal system and its the function, organization; civil and criminal law; rights and responsibilities of young people; contractual rights; and responsibilities in common business transactions. This course will help students understand their legal rights and responsibilities and legal implications in various business situations.

 

Office Business Experience

Prerequisite: Computer Applications (IHT)
Grade: 12
Status: 2 credits

Course Description: Students may enroll in a 2-hour block working in the USD 287 District Office. Students will rotate through payroll, accounts payable, transportation, food service, curriculum, and office administration positions and perform tasks as a member of the District Office staff. An interview process is required.
