Introduction to Woods

Prerequisite: none
Grade: 9 –10 or consent of the instructor
Status: 1 credit

Course Description: Introduction to Woods introduces students to the basic tools, machines, processes, materials, procedures, and planning involved in working with woods. The course includes classroom study along with laboratory experiences in making wood products.

 

Cabinet Making

Prerequisite:  Intro to Woods or equivalent and/or instructor’s approval
Grade: 10 - 12
Status: 1 credit

Course Description: The cabinet making student will: 1) demonstrate increased proficiency in the safe use of the wood processing machines; 2) develop and follow a complete set of plans in constructing a major cabinet construction piece of furniture;
3) identify and discriminate between various cabinetmaking terms, exotic woods, hardware, and finishing materials; 4) maintain the tools and machines, including sharpening, adjusting and cleaning; 5) identify and discriminate between various types and methods of cabinet construction; 6) discriminate between various styles and quality of furniture; 7) exhibit desirable work and interpersonal relationships; and 8) increase his-her knowledge of related occupational information. Vocational Carpentry I

Prerequisite: Introduction to Woods
Grade: 11 or consent of the instructor
Status: 3 credits

Course Description: This course for juniors is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in the various building trades.  This course is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in the construction of a custom home.  It would be helpful to the students who plan an occupation in the building trades, but also teaches skills necessary to tackle many maintenance tasks common to homeownership.  The course will include, but not limited to, experience in rough carpentry, roofing, siding, insulation, drywall, painting, staining, and finish carpentry.  The home may be built anywhere in the school district and transportation to the site will be provided. Vocational Carpentry II 

Prerequisite:  Intro to Woods
Grade: 12
Status: 3 hours
