Must select at least one credit from the following to meet graduation requirements.

 

Introduction to Art

Prerequisite:  None  
Grade: 9
Status: 1 credit

Course Description: This course will give students the opportunity to explore a variety of media and techniques and apply their discoveries to their own works of art. Students will learn the history of art and artists and develop projects that are influenced by past and current artists while making personal choices for individual expression. Students will build an awareness of aesthetics and apply the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to their creations and learn to evaluate and critique the merit of their work and the works of others. Students will discover and understand the influence visual arts have had on society through the ages.

 

Ceramics I

Prerequisite: Introduction to Art
Grade: 10-12
Status: 1 credit

Course Description: This course will teach students the construction and firing of clay. Many hands-on techniques will be taught the first quarter; later in the year they will explore wheel throwing techniques as well as glazing concepts.

 

Ceramics II

Prerequisite: Ceramics I
Grade: 10-12
Status: 1 credit

Course Description:  This course is designed for the students that have already taken Ceramics I to further their ability in the art of pottery. This is a fast paced production class. The course is 90% hands on and requires creativity and a great attitude.

 

Ceramics III

Prerequisite: Ceramics II
Grade: 11-12
Status: 1 credit

Course Description:  The students in this class will come up with their own projects and present them to the teacher.  The teacher and student will agree on the elements of the project and a timeline will be developed for its completion.  Students in this course will also mentor lower level ceramics students.

 

 

Drawing, Painting, and Design 

Prerequisite:  Introduction to Art    
Grade: 10 -12  
Status: 1 credit

Course Description: Students will expand their design skills by applying the Elements and Principles of Design to their work. The fundamentals of drawing, painting, and design will be taught using a variety of tools, which may include pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, scratchboard, linoleum block prints, acrylic paint, watercolors, etc. An emphasis will be placed of developing observational and drawing skills. Keeping a sketchbook will be required. As with all art classes, students will study art history, aesthetics, and criticism. Higher levels of this class will be available next year.

 

 

Advanced Art 

Prerequisite:  Drawing, Painting, and Design or consent of instructor       
Grade: 10-12  
Status: 1 credit

Course Description: This class is an extension of Drawing, Painting, and Design where students will build on a previous knowledge and work with more advanced concepts. A variety of media will be used. Keeping a sketchbook will be required. Students with advanced objectives in art will create a portfolio of work.

 

Band

Prerequisite: None
Grade: 9-12
Status: 1 credit

Course Description: The Pomona High School Band is a non-auditioned ensemble consisting of 9th-12th grade students. The focus in the fall semester is marching band, although there is also a winter band concert. The spring semester is split between basketball pep band and concert band. This class can be repeated every year.

 

Vocal

Prerequisite: None
Grade: 9-12
Status: 1 credit

Course Description: The Pomona High School Choir is a non-auditioned ensemble consisting of 9-12 grade students. Students will learn proper singing technique and perform both contemporary and traditional music. This group performs 5-8 times per year.  This class can be repeated every year.

 

 

Beginning Guitar

Prerequisite:  None  
Grade: 10-12  
Status: 1 credit

Course Description: Students will acquire a basic knowledge of guitar playing. In this class, students will learn to read music and play with proper technique as well as look at different styles of popular music. The student will be responsible for providing a guitar and book for the class.  More advanced sections may be available next year.
